What a topographic survey documents
Topographic surveys capture data related to the elevation changes of a property's terrain. Physical features: existing structures, hardscape, drainage features, and visible utilities. The data is referenced to a defensible coordinate system so it aligns with the boundary, adjacent surveys, and any existing site design.
The density of the data depends on the project. A site heading toward a detailed civil design gets a high-density topographic capture. A preliminary due-diligence scope can run lighter. Traditional field methods vs. drone topography
Survey Works runs topographic surveys using both traditional rod-and-GPS field methods and aerial drone-based photogrammetry and LiDAR. The right method depends on the terrain, the vegetation, the accuracy requirements, and the size of the site.

On small urban sites, wooded parcels, and any project where the accuracy of individual features such as a utility box or a specific elevation shot matters more than broad coverage, the field crew with a rod and GPS rover produces a cleaner result. On larger, more open terrain, the drone method collects far more data points in a fraction of the time, and the resulting DTM and orthorectified imagery give the design team more to work with downstream.
